THE THREE FACES OF CHICO(Warner Brothers, WS 1344) 1959

We've called this new album "The Three Faces of Chico" because I play three roles in it. I guess this set may surprise some people. and it even may annoy others. But I hope there's something of real interest in it for every jazz fan.

First of all, I guess I'm best known as a drummer. And that is one of the roles I play here. There are three tracks that are unaccompanied drum solos—Trinkets, Happy Little Dance, and No Speak No English, Man. On each of these I haven't tried to prove anything. but have tried to inject a little humor into some listeners' thoughts.

In regard to these drums tracks. I can only say that it's diffient for a drummer to play anything different than any other average drummer; although each drummer does have his own individual styling. I used the standard equipment I have with me whenever the Quintet takes the stand: two cymbals, sock cymbal, snare drum, tom toms, and bass drum. I didn't use tympani because I'm not a tympanist ... and I just don't carry them around. Instead, I work with sticks. mallets, and brushes to obtain different sound textures.

On Trinkets. for example. I worked eyclusively with brushes. It's a welcome change of sound. For Happy Little Dance, I used mallets throughout. And this one could be danced to, if you dig folk dancing. For No Speak No English, Man. which is a sort of wild thing, I worked with sticks, and played a lot on the rims. I wanted to get a sound like Indian drummers talking to each other.

We did these solos in one take each. I didn' work from a score but laid the sequences out in my mind before we started the tape rolling.

The second face I wear on this set is that of a singer. Now, this is a new thing for me on records, although I've done some singing on the floor with my group, mostly Foggy Day, because that was the one song I knew all the way through.

But having worked with such singers as Lena Horne, Billie Holiday, and Billy Eckstine, I felt I could do it. Actually, what I'm really interested in is phrasing. That's the most effective thing for a singer. That, and good material. I figured that if I was going to sing something, I'd better sing something everyone knows, so they could recognize the tune, if not the melody.

I used a reed section because I wanted to bring back the old Jimmie Lunceford sound with reeds. It's not often you hear a reed section playing ensemble choruses. Gerry Wiggins arranged The Best Things in Life Are Free, and John Anderson scored the other vocal sides: She's Funny That Way, Where or When and I Don't Know Why.

There's not much more to say about my singing, except that I hope you like it.

The third face I wear is that of the leader of the Quintet. My group consists of Wyatt Ruther on bass. Eric Dolphy on flute and reeds. Dennis Budimer on guitar, and Nathan Gershman on cello. Quite frankly, of all the Quintets I've had in the past, I think this one is the swingingest.

On these tracks, you hear a little different Quintet than what you've been used to. The Quintet is four years old and we've been constantly trying to broaden its range. Some may resent the hard swing we're going after, but one thing for sure: in the future we're going to try to please everyone's musical appetite with regard to the Quintet. Music and sounds don't stand still; you have to progress with the people. We play some hard swingers, but in our own intimate way. They're different than the average because of our instrumentation. Our old audiences, we feel, are still satisfied because we play numbers out of our o!d book. Then there are a lot of new people who are following us, and these hard swingers seem to be what they get excited about.

The only way to really broaden the range of the Quintet is by hiring new writers to write for it. In this set, we're introducing three. More Than You Know was arranged by Herb Pilhoffer, a pianist originally from Germany and now located in Minneapolis I think he captures the mood of the song and the Quintet very well Miss Movement is Eric Dolphy's first attempt at writing for the Quintet. Being an exciting player, he'd write an exciting kind of jazz tune. Kenny Dorham is a wonderful trumpet player and he's also a wonderful writer. Newport News is his first chart for our book. It's typical of the inventive, fine arrangements that I'm always grateful to have come my way. Without these, Chico would have no face at all, let alone three!

💐 Cabin in the Sky (1943) starring Ethel Waters, Lena Horne, Eddie ‘Rochester’ Anderson, Butterfly McQueen, Rex Ingram, Oscar Polk, with Ruby Dandridge and Louis Armstrong starring in smaller roles. This film was Vincente Minnelli’s first solo directorial credit, aside from the ‘Shine Sequence’ which was directed by Busby Berkeley, as well as the first film to showcase the ‘Moon Walk’ dance step.

Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown - September Song 👇 🎼 👇

"September Song" is an American pop standard composed by Kurt Weill, with lyric by Maxwell Anderson, introduced by Walter Huston in the 1938 Broadway musical Knickerbocker Holiday. It has since been recorded by numerous singers and instrumentalists. It was also used in the 1950 film September Affair, and for the credits in the television series May to December (a quote from the opening line of the song). Although the song was written as an old man's lament for the passing of his youth, some of the most famous versions have been recorded by women artists. Thus Sarah Vaughan's version of 1955, and Ella Fitzgerald's with pianist Paul Smith on the 1960 Verve release Ella Fitzgerald Sings Songs From Let No Man Write My Epitaph are both regarded as Jazz classics. Eartha Kitt and Weill's wife Lotte Lenya both recorded the song in 1957, and Jo Stafford, Patti Page as well as Anne Shelton also recorded versions during the 1950s. In 1958 Eydie Gormé included the song in her album, Love is the season and in 1989 both Lena Horne in The Men in My Life, and Julie Wilson in an album of Kurt Weill songs. Personally this song reminds me of waking up in on an early Saturday morning just as the sun starts to pierce through the window shade slits and the flowers outside with morning dew start to open up. As one eye slightly opens up and then the other followed by a fisted hand arm stretch and yawn… then Sarah starts to sing this song… oh so beautifully! 👄 This is one of the greatest version of September Song not only for Sarah Vaughan rendition but for Clifford Brown solo. It is epochal, this solo is one of the greatest trumpet solo in the history jazz.

👄 You're right on target. I've always felt that Clifford's solo is a perfect complement to Sarah's enchantment. Been listening to this for almost 50 years and it still makes my flesh crawl.

William Norton Bailey (December 8, 1912 – December 12, 1978) known professionally as Bill Bailey was an African American tap dancer. The older brother of actress and singer Pearl Bailey, he was considered to be one of the best rhythm dancers of his time and was the first person to be recorded doing the Moonwalk, although he referred to it as the “Backslide,” in the film Cabin in the Sky (1943), starring Ethel Waters, Eddie “Rochester” Anderson, and Lena Horne.

He was born in Newport News, Virginia, and spent his adolescence in Philadelphia.

At eighteen years old, he was discovered in New York by Lew Leslie and put in his production Blackbirds of 1930. After the production, he and Derby Wilson, another prominent taps act, formed a team that challenged each other at the Cotton Club and toured with Duke Ellington when his band traveled to Europe in 1933.

He was compared to Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, whom he considered a mentor and friend. Once he and Wilson went solo, he continued to be booked as a Bill Robinson imitation act, often standing in for him when he was away filming. Cabin in the Sky (1943)

When you finally see Cabin in the Sky, I know exactly what your reaction will be. You'll be yelling at the screen saying "How is it I’m only getting to this movie now?" With an all-black cast, this musical from the forties should by all reason be a classic. Even with its heavy Christian themes and a storytelling style that you don’t see much anymore (and I’m not talking about the singing), it’s so playful and innocent it should have a much larger following than it does.

Little Joe (Eddie "Rochester" Anderson) has been trying to put away his gambling obsession with the help of his strong-willed wife, Petunia (Ethel Waters). When he is killed over a gambling debt, the angel "The General" (Kenneth Spencer) gives him one more chance to change his ways but only because he committed a single sin too many and is facing an eternity in Hell. Feeling cheated, Lucifier Jr. (The son of Satan himself, played by Rex Ingram) doubles down on his efforts to make Little Joe return to his sinful ways.

It’s hard not to think of The Wizard of Oz and It’s a Wonderful Life when viewing Cabin in the Sky. The actors who play "The General" and Lucifer Jr. also play characters in Little Joe’s life. His death at the beginning of the film is an opportunity for him to return to the real world and see how different choices could affect his life (but in this case, for the better). There’s a lot of talk about Heaven and Hell but the film is showing us its own interpretation of what one’s battle for their soul might look like rather than sticking to what the Pastor might say. It’s in black and white. It’s a musical. All of these make it feel like a movie you’ve gathered around and watched with the family dozens of times over the years. Doubly so if you're Black because of the cast, the good message and the overall tone, which is perfectly suited for every member of the family.

While the songs featured may not stick in your head long after the movie ends, they fit the story so well that taking them out would be unthinkable. They’re wonderfully playful and expertly performed. Ethel Waters, in particular, is so strong she'll make you forgive the film for cutting short Louis Armstrong’s trumpeting solo (which leaves him with only a small part as one of Lucifer Jr.’s minions). Whenever she and Eddie Anderson are together, you completely believe them as a couple. You can feel the love between them and this makes you crave a happy ending. If only Little Joe can figure himself out!

There’s an air of innocence about the whole thing, even when beautiful gold-digger Georgia Brown (Lena Horne) comes around to seduce Little Joe (what he could’ve done to ever garner her attention is a mystery so you just know she’s up to no good). Lucifer Jr.’s menacing but not all that scary and when Rex Ingram smiles, you can’t help yourself; you do too. His smile is so infectious… maybe the apple does fall far from the tree sometimes? Probably not but he’s so charismatic you kind of like him as the villain.

If certain aspects of the film feel like they’re a little bit on-the-nose, a bit much, just give the film the benefit of the doubt and keep watching. Things all come together in the end in an unexpected way… but simultaneously not. "Oh, of course!" you’ll say as the picture closes. "In this kind of movie, that’s exactly how things should go!" If it were made today, you’d call it a cheat and it is a bit in a way but it’s fine to make the choices it makes once in a while. Particularly in these older movies, it just feels right.

Cabin in the Sky is a product of its time and some of the characters might be described as broad or stereotypical but it’s just so charming you won't care. It’s fine to have a movie like this one once in a while. You could say the same thing about musicals as a whole. Its performers, songs, jovial tone and uplifting story, along with a nostalgic feel throughout make it a winner, maybe even a new favorite. (June 18, 2021)

BEST OF 2022

Cela ressemble à une vieille rengaine se perpétuant depuis une bonne décennie : Le R&B serait en perdition depuis des années. Certains sur les réseaux sociaux n’hésitent pas à invoquer les légendes pour remettre de l’ordre dans ce genre musical paraît-il à la dérive. Nous assistons donc à l’émergence d’un mouvement semblable au Real Hip-Hop, mouvement de vieux aigris qui expriment une aversion aux nouvelles formes musicales. En réalité, proclamer que le R&B est en danger de mort est tout bonnement grotesque. Ce cru 2022 au contraire, nous a prouvé que ce genre musical reste le plus excitant et ce n’est pas prêt de s’arrêter. Libéré de la dictature des chiffres de vente, il a réussi à se renouveler avec une facilité déconcertante. Avec ces bases saines, il est plus simple d’ouvrir tous les champs des possibles et tenter d’innover en paix.

Originaire d’Atlanta, une ville si importante pour le R&B, Flwr Chyld a suivi le chemin naturel pour se faire connaître, en proposant ses compositions à des artistes triés sur le volet. En parallèle, il a remarquablement occupé le terrain, sortant des singles qui ont fait mouche. La consécration viendra rapidement avec la sortie de son premier EP «Iridescent Luv» où il étale son sens mélodique développé. Un parcours conclue avec la sortie de son remarquable premier album, grandement inspiré par les Neptunes de l’ère The Clones, avec cette recherche constante de bridges chère à Pharrell Williams. Le jeune musicien laisse deviner une marge de progression conséquente et pourrait être un artiste qui compte dans un futur proche.

Le Suédois Sebastien Mikael est déjà bien connu depuis une décennie et notamment grâce la sortie de son premier album «Speechless». Il revient après deux ans de silence avec un EP très court mais permet de montrer qu’il n’a pas perdu de son talent. Espérons toutefois que ce projet soit le signe d’un album plus conséquent en 2023.

Citons également le formidable «Tunnel Vision» du Britannique Reuben James qui s’est adjoint les services de la fine fleur du jazz représentée par CARRTONS, Conor Albert, Gareth Lockrane ou son compatriote britannique Tivon Pennicott, excellent au saxophone. Il s’impose définitivement comme l’un des meilleurs albums de l’année écoulée.

Ravyn Lenae a montré tous les espoirs placé en elle étaient justifiés avec «HYPNOS», premier album étourdissant musicalementqui part dans tous les sens tout en gardant avec une cohérence déconcertante. On passe d’un morceau uptempo à une ballade avec guitare sèche sans perdre le sens du disque qui s’avère dense et varié. L’une des plus belles révélations de l’année écoulée.

Beyoncé a étonné son monde avec «RENAISSANCE», disque dédié exclusivement aux pistes de danse avec des sonorités empruntés à la House de Chicago et le Disco. Bien aidé par The-Dream qui a pris une bonne dose de jouvence de l’Abbé Soury pour cet projet, cet excellent album prouve que la chanteuse originaire de Houston a toujours cette envie de dérouter l’auditeur et personne ne va s’en plaindre. Difficile de comparer «RENAISSANCE» avec «Honestly, Nevermind» de Drake bien qu’il ait choisi de d’emprunter le même chemin teinté de House pour son dernier solo en date, fait pâle figure et illustre l’état du rap commercial complètement à la ramasse.

Quand la vertu cardinale est la qualité musicale et non les chiffres de vente, le R&B s’impose comme le genre musical le plus excitant et ce n’est pas prêt de s’arrêter avec les futurs albums prévus en 2023 de Kelela, SiR, l’impressionnant Devin Morrison auteur d’une année complètement folle avec sa série de projets instrumentaux nommée Dream Lobby ou NxWorries, ressuscité pour notre plus grand plaisir par Anderson.Paak et Knowledge après des années de brouilles.

Detroit continue son bonhomme de chemin jusqu’à redevenir la scène la plus importante de rap régional. Après quelques années de domination sans partage de Los Angeles, la mort de Drakeo The Ruler, locomotive vertueuse de cette scène a été vécue comme un véritable traumatisme et la Californie a visiblement besoin de temps pour se relever de ce coup de massue. La plus grande ville du Michigan a donc réussi un retour remarquable grâce en grande partie à la bonne santé des plus gros rappeurs locaux comme Bandgang Lonnie Bands et Babyface Ray. S’ajoute à cela une nouveauté qui s’est imposée tout au long de l’année. Pendant des années, les thèmes des rappeurs de Detroit se sont concentrés sur des techniques de scam, la violence inhérente à ce territoire mais en excluant le poids du traumatisme des drames humains. L’envie d’introspection s’est visiblement imposée chez à peu près tous les rappeurs originaires du Michigan. Cela donne des projets plus consistants et fendre l’armure permet des choix musicaux plus variés qui donnent un surplus touchant aux sonorités glaciales de Detroit.

Skilla Baby, jeune rappeur et accessoirement protégé de Sada Baby a étonné avec «Detroit Raised Me», album triste où il rend hommage à des proches disparus. Il y aborde également ses soucis judiciaires mais également la rue où il a grandi. On a parfois l’impression d’entendre le légendaire The Jacka sur certains morceaux.

Il suffit d’écouter l’exceptionnel «RIP, Pt. 1» de Babyface Ray, morceau hommage pour les disparus mais aussi un message d’espoir pour la nouvelle génération représentée par son fils pour comprendre qu’un changement s’est opéré dans cette ville meurtrie par la violence. Bandgang Lonnie Bands va définitivement confirmer cette sensation en proposant l’un des plus grands projets rap de cette année 2022 avec le sidérant «Scorpion Eyes». On reprochait aux rappeurs de la scène de Detroit de ne pas s’ouvrir assez, on peut dire pour cette fois que Lonnie a choisi de déverser tout ce qu’il a dans le cœur dans un album digne d’une psychanalyse sur les plaies mentales d’un territoire en proie à la violence extrême. Une œuvre qui restera sans aucun doute dans l’histoire, on reste estomaqué par cette ambiance froide et lugubre, absolument incontournable dans Scorpion Eyes. Un opus définitivement à part et à ranger à côté de Manger On McNichols d’un certain Boldy James.

Est-il possible de trouver un terme pour qualifier l’année complètement folle de Boldy James véritablement touché par la grâce depuis 3 ans? Les innombrables projets communs avec entre autres Futurewave ou Nicholas Craven nous laissent sans voix devant tant de qualité délivrée par le rappeur. Il semble qu’il n’a pas du tout comme projet de ralentir en 2023 en nous annonçant sans pression un album composé de beats produits par J. Dilla!

Il faut revenir quand même sur l’année rap de Los Angeles juste pour Ralfy The Plug, frère du regretté Drakeo The Ruler qui a repris le flambeau avec une année remplie mais avec des projets à la qualité inégale. OTM, duo de rappeurs choyés également par Drakeo ont montré de belles promesses avec deux albums marquants. Qu’en est-t-il de Remble, star en devenir mais qui semble souffrir des embrouilles obscures avec la Stinc Team? L’avenir le dira et surement en 2023.

Comment évoquer 2022 et ne pas revenir sur le retour de Kendrick Lamar? Absent depuis 5 ans, le rappeur de Compton revient avec un opus dense, boiteux musicalement mais toujours fascinant sur la forme. On reste impressionné par tant de liberté créative, la variété des thèmes abordés les fautes de goût inhérentes à la sincérité du propos. Qu’on trouve son album pédant ou magnifique, il faut reconnaître la puissance de Kendrick Lamar qui s’impose comme le meilleur artiste musical en 2022. Absolument personne à part lui, peut offrir une œuvre aussi complexe malgré tous les défauts du monde. L’un des rares artistes qui nous pousse à revenir sur ses projets dans l’espoir de mieux saisir ces choix artistiques vraiment à part.

Le moment de l’année restera le suicide assisté de Kanye West. Se sentant visiblement poussé des ailes ou peut-être dans un exercice d’autodestruction périlleux, le rappeur originaire de Chicago ne sera plus en mesure de nous proposer un seul projet et tant mieux! Celui qu’on surnomme Ye ressemblait à cet l’arbre qui cache cette vaste forêt rapologique, enkystée dans une médiocrité ambiante depuis tant d’années. Avec sa disparation irréversible du monde musical, le rap doit se servir de cette opportunité tombée du ciel pour se renouveler de manière urgente et oublier les excès en tous genres qui ont caché la faiblesse artistique de Kanye West depuis trop longtemps. La fin de carrière de Kanye West est peut-être cette chance inespérée, venue de nulle part pour espérer le début d’un nouveau cycle.

A travers de vidéos enregistrés où ils reprennent les morceaux cultes d’MF Doom dans une chambre d’ado et avoir répondu favorablement à une invitation par Thundercat pour une prestation live avec Ariana Grande, le duo DOMi & JD Beck ont montré tout le potentiel effarant qui pourrait les mener à un succès certain. Anderson.Paak a remporté la mise pour produire leur tant attendu premier album. Entourés d’un casting XXL (Thundercat, Snoop Dogg, Mac DeMarco, Herbie Hancock ect…), ce duo curieux sur le papier (DOMi est originaire de Nancy, JD Beck de Californie) montre que toutes les attentes sur eux étaient bel et bien justifiées. Leur premier album nommé «TiGHT» fait ressortir à la perfection les prouesses techniques que ce soit au piano et basse simultanément (!) avec DOMi qui a fait ses classes au prestigieux Berklee College de Boston et JD Beck protégé du band d’Erykah Badu avec son jeu de batteur digne d’un alien venu d’une planète méconnue. La présence du légendaire Herbie Hancock dans «TiGHT», lui qui s’est imposé comme le musicien le plus inspirant de la nouvelle génération du jazz est une sorte de passage de flambeau à ces mioches immatures et décomplexés mais si talentueux.

L’album jazz de l’année est sans doute le premier opus de KingKlavé et accessoirement, leader du groupe (U)nity. Le batteur américano-cubain a délivré un savant mélange avec comme base la musique cubaine mélangée à peu près tous les genres musicaux qui font l’actualité en 2022 donc bien évidemment le rap. L’héritage de Cuba s’exprime par l’omniprésence des congas ou la Quijada, le tout mélangé avec des rythmiques déstructurées empruntées au légendaire J. Dilla qui plane comme un fantôme à travers les percussions inspirés de KingKlavé. A noter la liste d’invités étourdissante avec la présence du claviériste DJ Harrison, le célèbre Pino Palladino qu’on ne présente plus mais aussi son fidèle ami Javier Santiago. Ce formidable disque est aussi éminemment politique et imprégné par cet héritage insulaire qui rend cette musique si particulière et fascinante. Que Viva Cuba Libre!

Sélectionné par K7! Records pour être l’acteur de leur série culte DJ-Kicks, Theo Parrish a décidé de rendre hommage à la scène de Detroit, toujours aussi vivante et peu importe le genre musical. Il nous offre donc un voyage long de 19 titres sur la variété musicale de cette ville si importante pour la musique. Le magnifique short film réalisé par Kashira Downrigde nous permet de rencontrer les artistes invités par Theo Parrish. Devant son piano, Ian Fink qui a contribué à cette compilation tente une explication de la scène de Detroit en citant quelques genres musicaux afro-américains dont la techno. La réalisatrice fait un choix de mise en scène plein de sens. Elle interviewe les protagonistes chez un disquaire, entourés de disque de Ronnie Laws et Ramsey Lewis, dignes représentants du jazz des années 60 et 70. C’est comme pour illustrer que la techno est un genre musical avant tout afro-américain. C’est une mise au point salvatrice pour cette ville qui a tant donné pour la musique noire.

William Norton Bailey (December 8, 1912 – December 12, 1978), known professionally as Bill Bailey was an African-American tap dancer. The older brother of actress and singer Pearl Bailey, he was considered to be one of the best rhythm dancers of his time and was the first person to be recorded doing the Moonwalk, although he referred to it as the "Backslide," in the film Cabin in the Sky (1943), starring Ethel Waters, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, and Lena Horne. He was born in Newport News, Virginia, and spent his adolescence in Philadelphia. At eighteen years old, he was discovered in New York by Lew Leslie and put in his production Blackbirds of 1930. After the production, he and Derby Wilson, another prominent taps act, formed a team that challenged each other at the Cotton Club and toured with Duke Ellington when his band traveled to Europe in 1933. He was compared to Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, who he considered a mentor and friend. Once he and Wilson went solo, he continued to be booked as a Bill Robinson imitation act, often standing in for Robinson when he was away filming.
